Valentine's Day
Roses are red, violets are blue, we love flowers and so do you!
Did you know that Valentine's Day is one of the most celebrated holidays in the United States next to Christmas?
We often splurge on this holiday to show our loved ones how much we truly care, but why is that and where did those traditions originate?
Stemming from an ancient Roman festival, Valentine's Day has evolved over the centuries. It wasn't until the 1300s that this holiday even became associated with romance and love. The first record of a hand written card was in the 15th Century and it wasn't until the 17th Century when the British began a tradition of exchanging Valentine's Day cards and letters. In the 18th Century the tradition became popular in the US and has turned into the major consumer holiday we know it to be today.
We love this holiday because one of the most popular gifts given are FLOWERS, most common being ROSES. Millions of roses are produced each year for this holiday alone - how crazy!
The tradition of giving flowers stems back to the 17th Century in Europe as an expressionist art form - the language of flowers. And as you guessed, the sentiment of sending red roses translated to deep love. The rose took on this meaning because of it's affiliation with Aphrodite and greek mythology.
Valentine's Day is one day out of 365 days that make up a year, so while we celebrate this holiday to show our loved ones how much we care we also plan to treat every day as if it were Valentine's Day! In the big picture of life there are so many things to be grateful for, but being loved is one that stands out and gives us that sense of belonging and fulfillment which is priceless.
Now get out there and go buy your loved ones some flowers!
